Entering the world of Stock Photography

The year is 2021 and Stock Photography has long been a novelty. Still, for those who don’t know, stock photography is primarily a commercial photography sold through various online Stock agencies. It can be with models, without models, to show everyday life situations and photos of everything you use in everyday life. The choice is great and the demand is growing day by day. The buyer has the opportunity to get the material he needs to work in a few minutes and at a very reasonable price. It used to be that way – the prices of licenses were much higher and the photos were almost exclusively provided by professional photographers, who knew how to adequately use the former (expensive) photo equipment. However, over time, photo equipment has become more accessible and easier to use, increasing the number of potential stock photographers.

Today, however, some photographers claim that the market with stock photos is oversaturated, that it is difficult to stand out in the mass of photos that are available, but we will cover more about that below.

What equipment do you need to get started?

First of all, you need a camera. Whether you start with a DSLR, Mirrorless or Prosumer camera is entirely up to you. In addition to the body of the camera, you also need a lens that can be purchased complete with the camera or purchased separately if there is no kit or if the one from the kit does not suit you. Of course, there are also memory cards for which I recommend taking a couple of pieces for security (if any of them break down) and the ability to keep different photo sessions on different cards.

In addition to all the above, without which you can not start, you also need a photo / video tripod that would facilitate stabilization and with which you can not get blurred photos due to shaking the camera.

As you get more into the stock theme, you will realize that if you do not have enough natural light, you will need additional lighting to get the perfect quality that stock photography requires. Whether it’s a camera flash, a flash head with a softbox or LED lighting depends on what you’re shooting.

If you decide to photograph food, products and objects from a bird’s eye view, you will need a so-called C-stand tripod that can hold your camera. Some of the possible aids include a photo table, backgrounds (paper, canvas and photo textured backgrounds).

Technical requirements for photographs
In order for your photos to be accepted by the stock agency, they need to meet a few conditions. Photos must be of the best quality, uncompressed and, of course, must be yours. Do not attach photos to which you do not have absolute rights. Pay attention to the technical quality of the photos. Choose ones that are clear and sharp and well lit. Technical quality is more important than theme / motive at this stage.

The application itself is a process where you send a certain number of photos to the agency so that they can assess whether the quality meets their requirements. Let the themes of your first 10 photos be varied. Do not send photos of the same object taken from different angles and the like. For now (until your application is approved), avoid photos that show recognizable human faces. Each such photograph must be accompanied by the consent of the person in the photograph for the use of the photograph for marketing purposes (so-called model release) and such photographs undergo a special check. Also, do not attach photos that show the object / logo / etc. on which another person / company has copyright – e.g. a photo of a man wearing Nike sneakers with the Nike trademark easily visible or a photo with a McDonald’s restaurant in the background.

Keyword optimization for niche search and selection

When the photos are accepted and you get the status of contributor, the next thing you should seriously deal with are search words, so-called tags. It is necessary to research well which are the popular tags, one should think like a buyer who comes to find a product. If you are photographing a scene from everyday life, it is necessary to explain in the tags and description of the photograph as well and precisely as possible what the photograph is about. Of course, in addition to a precise description and good tags, it is also necessary to choose a niche that is not too exploited in the world of stock photography. This makes it easier for potential buyers to find you and buy your photo.

Tags are science!

The most popular niches for photography are Lifestyle, medicine, environmental awareness, food, etc. As much as these topics have attracted the most attention, it can be said that it is currently very difficult to be competitive in the market of these topics because there are already tens of thousands of such photos. Only creativity and some new angle / perception on existing topics can set you apart from the competition.

Specialties that are not so overwhelmed and the interest for it is developing are:

1. The craft of maturing – photos of the old with no handling that show them doing regular things.

2. Sicknesses and contaminations – You wouldn’t believe, yet illnesses and diseases are one of the most sought after yet neglected subjects in stock photography.

Skin rashes, injuries, fevers and different things that end up peopling during their life should likewise be shown. Online journals, magazines and independent ventures utilize these pictures for projects that raise medical problems, to delineate articles or posts on informal organizations and to promote prescriptions.

3. Less observed sports exercises – Rugby, cricket, frisbee tossing, youngsters’ games exercises can be your benefit and type of revenue.

4. Occasion stylistic theme – Selling occasional visual material marked down is a mutually advantageous technique for picture takers assuming that the pictures are one of a kind and real. In any case, you better ponder shooting a progression of pictures of occasion stylistic layout and the method involved with finishing. You can catch in a real sense everything about, table and bloom plans to cooking and blending mixed drinks.

Notwithstanding home arrangements, take a couple photographs of wrapping gifts. These photos are particularly climatic in light of the fact that they outline the best snapshot of each and every occasion – arrangements.
